Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy uses the properties of essential oils to heal the body. Unlike most creams and carrier oils, essentials are able to penetrate the skin and enter the body.

The history of aromatherapy and it's healing ability dates back centuries. Evidence of using oils dates back to Egytian's use of oils to preserve bodies in the pyramids. Modern day medicine has synthetically reproduced many of the naturally-occuring chemicals found in essential oils to produce the drugs that you are prescribed today. One of the benefits of essential oils is their lack of side effects compared with modern medicine. However, aromatherapy is a complementary therapy and is not intended to replace the medical profession.

It should be mentioned that not all oils are always safe for everybody. Essential oils should be used with respect and great care. For example - many oils should NOT be used in pregnancy. It is always better to consult with the guidance of a properly-trained and qualified aromatherapist. He or she will know the correct amount of the oils to be used, their contraindications and be able to advise you on the basis of your health at the time.

How is aromatherapy given?

Massage - this is the most common medium. A blend of therapeutic oils is made with a carrier oil and massaged into the skin. The massage is usually more gentle than other types of massage. It can be used in isolated areas where needed. This is useful for many ailments from muscle tension and circulatory problems to nervous disorders such as stress and migraines

Inhalation - oils are dropped into boiling water. The steam is inhaled until the drops evaporate. Useful for colds and flu syptoms. This method is also used by burning oils with a burner. Oils used in this way can improve mood, concentration and increase positivity. This happens minute oil chemicals reaching the brain through the olfactory system (nasal passages).

Bath - beneficial chemicals within the oils enter the body, both through the skin and the nose

Compress - Oils and water mixture is soaked into a small towel and plastic film or foil is place over it to stop the oils form evaporating for as long as possible allowing the properties of the oils to enter the skin. Cold compress is very useful for inflammatory conditions such as gout or swelling. Hot compress would be used for muscle strains or healing dry skin conditions
